apparently I cook sometimes now?

December 24th, 2014 (07:18 pm)

Current iteration of the Pecan Pie Experiment (adapted off the side of the Karo syrup bottle):

1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup cane sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 1/2 cup pecans
1 9-inch pie crust. (It is totally okay to buy a frozen one from the grocery store -- the pastry in this recipe is basically just there to hold the filling together -- but if your nana made you swear to her on her deathbed that you would always use her pie crust recipe, go for it.)

Beat together everything but the pecans.

Add the pecans.

Pour into pie shell. Tear a sheet of aluminum foil into little strips and put them over the exposed edges of the crust, to prevent burning.

Bake 1 hour at 350. Let cool for two hours.

The brown sugar gives it a wonderful dense silky-gooey caramel texture (which also makes it potentially not something you want to serve to formal company; it refuses to leave the tin neatly, and you will end up prying chunks of it out with your serving utensil), and while it's obviously a syrup bomb, the cane sugar keeps it from screaming "SUGARRRRR!" as loudly as white sugar does.

If you don't like, can't eat, or can't afford pecans, leave them out and you will have something that cannot technically be called either shoofly pie or chess pie, but can cause you to eat it with your fingers at three in the morning.

If the trial pie (slightly different formulation) is anything to go by, it improves with keeping instead of going runny, but I can't make promises.

I have a strong desire to see whether adding a bit of salt (or even using salted nuts) would perk it up a little, and the nuts got a little more burnt than I like them, but as it stands, solid A-.

december posting meme, day... q

December 20th, 2014 (07:22 pm)

Rather than drive myself batshit trying to catch up on these, I've decided that any missed topics will be rolled over to the same day next month. Because retail.

And WHAT a one to be coming back with:

December 4 - Vanessa Ives -- [personal profile] d_generate_girl

Oh, God, I am so unprepared to write this post; work kind of beat me senseless today. Still, in the interest of keeping up with the meme, and with the understanding that I am promising a rain check for full-on meta:

Vanessa Ives, for those of you who are just joining us, is the central character of Showtime's Penny Dreadful: she's a young Victorian woman (and note that I don't use the term "lady"; she was definitely brought up in that class and still enjoys a few of its privileges, but has proceeded to kick about 90% of the behavioral norms in the teeth) with a very peculiar relationship to the spirit world.

... actually, she's more or less a witch in the old-school, Malleus Maleficarum, Salem Village sense. And she's really, really peculiar about her long-lost childhood friend (whose name sort of happens to be Mina).

Throughout the course of eight episodes, she proves herself to be almost unremittingly selfish, obsessive, secretive, hypocritical, destructive, self-destructive, and willing to tolerate really profound human evil as a means to an end.

I love her like pie. (And she does have good points.)

(I do not really have the energy at this time to start talking about media representations of female characters, but I'm just going to say that I adore this show for letting Vanessa just be Vanessa, and for actively undercutting any suggestion that she might be headed for a redemption arc, and that is all.)

What I adore about Vanessa, specifically, is that despite Penny Dreadful being sort of, um, heightened in its characterization, and despite her tendency to have, at most, the toe of one boot in this world, she feels real and unstereotyped in a way that very few fictional characters, and even fewer fictional women, tend to. The scenes of mild spoilerCollapse ) Which, really, is the whole point; she's not filling a plot-required position, she's not being created by her narrative, she creates it, through very specific choices made for very specific, complicated, kind of fucked-up kind of reasons.

Her choices create the space in which the entire story happens. It's kind of amazing.

Or I could just link you to Drea's vid, which says way more than I do, way more elegantly.

December 2: If you could design a makeup/nail polish line, what would it be like? -- [personal profile] rhivolution

Kind of a smushing-together of Sugarpill, NYX, and... not so much KBShimmer now as KBShimmer, like, two years ago before they got really into cremes and white/grey bases (although, I have to say, I like the look of some of the holos they're doing now).

Also good and easy-to-find foundations in an actual representative range of skin tones. (It tells you everything about the area where I used to live when I say that the darkest shade of foundation it was humanly possible to find in any makeup section anywhere in the county was Band-Aid beige.)

Also, there would be perfumes. A lot of perfumes. Because I keep having ideas for them lately; this, for example, and also I have recently become enamored of the idea of constructing the headiest, skankiest, most indolic civetty honey-tuberose KNOWN TO MAN (I can hear the face [personal profile] ceebee_eebee is making right now) and calling it "Shame." Because.

(Actually, having recently become enamored of Jolie Madame, I'm wondering if you could get a leather basenote in there too, or if it would just be too much of a muchness.)

december posting meme, day 1

December 1st, 2014 (12:01 am)

It's technically Monday, and I have this written; therefore, I post.

December 1: Something you would like to achieve as a vidder -- [personal profile] isagel

... more vidding. Of any kind, really. I haven't finished anything in about eighteen months, and while there are perfectly good external reasons, it irks me to death. (I don't quite have the range of self-esteem issues with vidding that I do with writing; I only feel very, very useless when I'm not vidding enough. But it irks.)

Specifically: I want to experiment more with structure, which has historically tended to be my weak point -- both in that I tend to rely on very straightforward, linear narrative retelling, and in that pretty much everything I make falls apart in the last verse. This is usually only somewhat my fault. I have a positive gift for picking subjects that don't quiiiiiite give me enough footage to work with at the climax; you can really see this in "Baby Says," which really should have had either a lot more Freddie before the last minute or so, or a lot less in the last minute or so. Neither one was really possible, and it annoys me, but there's really no way I can see to remake it given the song and the footage available. I have a S2 ensemble vid vaguely in mind, but the song is ambitious enough to make me seriously doubt my own sanity.

Oh! Ensemble vidding. I'd like to do more of that. I have a really good song for a Peaky Blinders ensemble vid that would be a lot more straightforward, but I need at least one more season's worth of arc development and preferably, like, three. But yeah; the narrative style that seems to come most easily to me is single-POV character study, with a side order of really warped ship vid ("Between the Bars" did not come to me at all easily. AT. ALL. But I'm still more proud of that than anything else I've done.) and I'd like to broaden my range a little.

(The Penny Dreadful vid I'm theoretically working on is sort of a stylistic sequel to BtB. It's a howling pain in the ass, and I'm perpetually tempted to buy the DVDs and start over from scratch, because the TV-rip footage is just such shit. But I'm going to be really proud of it when I figure it out.)

But, anyway, to return to my original point: I want to do more stream-of-conscious narrative. I have admired bradcpu and hollywoodgrrl to the point of awe since well BEFORE I started vidding, and really, that's only increased, because now I can kind of see what they're each DOING, and wow. Just wow. I'm finding more and more that I'm drawn to vids that require a lot of re-watching to really parse, because the hit of comprehension when I finally do is so rewarding; I still remember the "!!!!" I got when I cracked "So What'cha Want" all by myself, without reading any commentary*.

And I want to make more vids that are more like that; I want that amazing density and economy, where every single clip is conveying a huge amount of information and some of it is information you would never have picked up from casual viewing, or straightforward retelling. (The breaking glass in "So What'cha Want" makes me gasp every time, because yes.) I've got a Peaky Blinders vid on the go that is basically me teaching myself how to do that, and it's astonishingly slow going, but it's fun. It turns out MAKING that kind of vid makes you feel just as clever as understanding someone else's does. (And the POV is just a GIFT for paranoid image-matching free association. Just such a gift.)

Basically, I want to move away from telling and towards showing. I feel like most of the vids I've made have a pretty clear, straightforward thesis statement that could be easily summed up by a careful viewer after one or two viewings whether they knew the canon or not**, and that's great, but I don't want it to be the only thing I can do.

In hl's terms -- God, I think I read that essay not long after it was posted, fucking time how does it work -- I would like to move away from narrative, and towards lyric. At least sometimes.

And more playing with POV. Always. In any context. And more objectively insane/hard to source POV choices. (I have been resolved to make an Ashes to Ashes vid about Caroline Price for so long now. So, so long. I had a pretty good start in progress when my old laptop died and I lost the song file. You can start telling me how crazy I am now, and I will wholeheartedly agree, but I actually feel really strongly that it needs to happen.)

Also, you know, honestly, I'd like to make a large-fandom vid and be the runaway hit at VVC. :p Admittedly the second half of that is sort of out of my control, but I actually have a really good idea for a Harry Potter vid that is right in my comfort zone narratively; I just need to get the footage, sit down, and make it. (I have such ethical issues with the song it demands to be set to. Such, such ethical issues. But it's the only song.)

* Incidentally, if you ever really need to know why I stopped watching House lo these many years ago and can't even re-watch the early, good episodes: THAT. Because that sheer straightforward ugliness was there in the source ALL THAT TIME, and boy did the majority of the writers not know it -- I suspect Doris Egan did, but I'm not going back to confirm.

** "Protect Me From What I Want" is probably the clearest example of this; I mean, the thesis statement is the fucking title, and I think it's my best-structured character study, because Persie's entire story is just... constant looping reiterations of that statement, and the only work I had to do was FINDING THE FUCKING VISUAL CUES. Which, as anyone who was there for that probably remembers...

Also, I've had it suggested to me that what looks obvious from my perspective is kind of less so from anyone else's, especially when they don't know the canon, but I don't know for sure. Would love feedback!

I have come up with an analogy that entertains me way too much: if perfume genres were literary genres, fruity-florals would be YA Paranormal Romance With Love Triangle.

As in: it's definitely possible to make a very good one, but it's really easy and really profitable to cynically set out to make a flagrantly mediocre one and shift a million units, and a lot of people are going to look down on the entire category because A. there are just so many bad ones out there, and B. the target market skews very young, very femme, and not necessarily really into anything outside the genre.

(Following this logic, I think the Angel clones are Very Very Mainstream Het BDSM Romance, in that it's undoubtedly possible to make a fantastic one, but I personally will hate it regardless, while quite liking a lot of the components in other contexts.)

... so I've been thinking that someday, when I can afford it, I'd like to take some courses in perfume composition.

(I have this... set of notes accruing in my head, that I think might go together if you fiddled them around the right way. Leather, incense, blackcurrant, benzoin; would that actually be terrible? Is there something out there that's like that and I just haven't found it? I'd say possibly also cumin, but then [personal profile] ceebee_eebee would be sad.)

In the event that one of my December posting meme posts ends up longer than three sentences, it's probably going to involve me making a lot of sweeping statements about what kind of sex scenes exist in most fannish het.

I don't think I read a wide enough sampling of fannish het.

So: help, please? I need links to popular m/f fic with sex in it -- not, like, the best of the best of your own personal smut collection, (although God knows I'll take that, too, for personal use) but readable, reasonably explicit fic that gets a ton of recs and AO3 hits. (This is where I really miss the old del.icio.us, man, I'm telling you.)

Because, you know, it's possible the zeitgeist has changed since the last time I was reading without personal recommendation. I don't say I think that's entirely the case, but I think it's possible.
